REVIEW: One Eskimo -- Ritz Theatre, Tampa, FL 5/19/10
London-based One Eskimo proved to be a pleasant surprise for concert goers at Tampa’s Ritz Theatre this week. Although the vast majority of the crowd was there to see headliner Michael Franti & Spearhead, One Eskimo caught the attention of many with their cleverly crafted original tunes highlighted by Beatles-esque three part harmonies and predominantly acoustic instrumentation, with some pre-recorded electronic loops reminiscent of Coldplay’s heavily layered sound.
The brainchild of singer/songwriter Kristian Leontiou, known in the UK for his critically promising solo efforts in 2004, One Eskimo came to fruition initially as a collaboration with drummer buddy Adam Falkner. With the addition of bassist Jamie Sefton, who adds some interesting horn treatments when the mood strikes, and guitarist Peter Rinaldi, the group was complete.

One Eskimo definitely does not disappoint when performing live, as they appear to be a tight cohesive unit, seamlessly shifting from one song to the next, the common denominator being a strong multi-layered foundation with live acoustic instrumentation. Utilizing some pre-recorded loops to replicate the intricate, dream-like electronic textures found on their self-titled debut album, notable songs during their opening set included "UFO," “Amazing,” "Hometime," and "Kandi," which features a catchy chorus sampled from Candi Staton's "He Called Me Baby." The band had the crowd dancin’, hootin’ and hollerin’ about halfway through their performance and appeared to make a positive impression on all in attendance. With proper exposure and continued creative innovation, One Eskimo has the potential to become a major musical force to be reckoned with in the not too distant future.

Homemade Rose Sugar

While I was in Portland Oregon, my friend had some rose sugar that was so yummy with tea. I tried to find some locally and was unsuccessful. I went on line and found a really easy recipe. 1 cup of organic rose petals well crushed, stems removed to 2 cups of granulated sugar. Put it in a mason jar for about 2 weeks and shake it a couple times a day. Here are some pictures of the sugar infusing and then the finished product. If you've never been to Ulta, you really must check it out for great bargains galore. The store is similar to Sephora. It carries both drugstore and department store cosmetics, hair products, and perfume. They also have a high end salon on premise. If you sign up at there website http://www.ulta.com/ they will e-mail you weekly coupons that you can use in there store. My favorite thing to do is scour their clearance areas. Products are usually marked down 50-60%. Sometimes they run specials where you can take another 40% off clearance. They also accept the $3.50 off a $10.00 purchase on clearance. They have been running a check out special lately that if you sign up for a 2 month risk free InStyle magazine subscription, you get a gift. I have received a really nice tote bag and a full size tube of Baby Phat body lotion. You can sign up as many times as you want. Just call the toll free number to cancel the magazine if you don't want to be billed for it. When you go to the store sign up for their frequent buyer card. They mail you coupons for free products when you've spent at least $50 in a given cycle. The more you spend the more free stuff you get. I got all of this yesterday for $7.00. There is a store located by Hooters on 41 in Sarasota and a new one in the Target shopping center on University Parkway. Have fun!!

Computer crash

I have become so dependent on my computer in the last year that when it crashed 2 weeks ago, I was like an addict going through withdrawals. Apparently the source of my computers demise was due to certain sources ( I'm not mentioning any names ) my obsession with freebie sites. After some careful calculations it has been determined that my freebie habit is costing me in computer repair bills approximately $300 a year. I would say that is a lot of enjoyable entertainment for a year. Other then the headaches it has caused me , it was worth every penny.

Greatest find of the week! While digging through the games at the 50% off goodwill on the trail, I thought I hit the jackpot when I found a plastic baggie full of Pokemon cards for Ben sitting in a box with some other random items. The final price after discount for the whole box was $1.oo. When I got the box home and looked through it I found a Nintento gameboy advance with a game in it. It was covered with stickers so I cleaned it up and went to the store to get a power cord. It charged right up. Used ones like this sell for $39.99. Ben has not put it down for 3 days. $1.00 has bought me alot of peace and quiet. Amen! P.S. Also got monoply junior for $1.00 too at the same store.

Lately I have been very attracted to tarnished silver and the aged patina that it has. I started noticing it on my trips to Goodwill and wondering how can use these discarded tea set pieces in a new and creative way. Then it dawned on me that they would look great in a bathroom or on a vanity. Fill them with cotton balls, Q-tips, make-up brushes, beach glass and shell collections, or whatever you use regularly.I usually find pieces at Goodwill from$1.99 to $3.99.The more ornate the better.

I found 4 pairs of boys cargo shorts,1 Ralph Lauren plaid button down boys shirt, 2 boys hawaiin shirts,1 boys swim shirt,1 tie-dye shirt,1 men's Sean John shirt,2 silverplated pieces( I'm collecting now ),1 paint kit w/canvas',1 melissa & Doug wood'n crafts kit ( both kits have never been open ), Cute toss pillow, handmade afghan,and a collectible plate. Here is a sampling of some of the wonderful freebies I got this week. The 2 tubes of hemp cream came from The Body Shop using a $10 off coupon on a $10 purchase. The cream was $10 of course. I also got a 4 pc. facial kit from Origin's which recently opened a counter in the Southgate Dillards. It involved a 2 minute consultation and then I got a gift set with MSRP of $40. The Porsche Posters were an awesome freebie, very suitable for framing. The Mountain Meadow Herbs Femme Defense herbal dietary supplement is a full size bottle MSRP of $29.95. Not counting the magazines and other random small samples, I would say I hauled in about $100 in free stuff this week!!! P.S. I will never have to buy tampons again, I get sample packs practically every week.

How to make a shell mirror

It's really easy. All you need is a bunch of shells, glue gun and a mirror with a frame. I used the smaller,flatter shells to form my bottom layer and then used the rarer more decorative shells to form a pattern on top. Then I used the largest shells to form a bonnet at the top. Make sure you use alot of glue. It will form glue like webs ,but those are easily removed at the end. Hang only in doors if you are using a glue gun. I found my mirror at a garage sale for five dollars. These mirrors sell in designer shops for $300 and more.

Pretty simple and fun and a way to be one of the first to try something new. Today I'm trying a new product by Scrubbing Bubbles action scrubber. It's a sponge like device that fits in your hand comfortable and has disposable cleaning pads that stick on it like Velcro. You moisten the pad and then go to town cleaning the soap scum off your tub, sinks, toilets wherever soap scum lingers. The smell is a nice citrus scent and you don't need to put any elbow grease into it what so ever. It leaves your porcelain clean and sparkly. Please note: this product does not remove mold however. My $20 a day addiction to Goodwill

It started years ago but it was an occasionally recreational hobby. Ever since my visit to Portland Oregon it has become a daily obsession. Portland Oregon has the most awesome Goodwills. They are like high end consignment shops with designer labels and clothes in pristine quality. I found a pair of Seven jeans for $12.99 and a Gusto shirt for $2.29. That's how it started. Now I'm scouring the local sarasota Goodwills whenever I can. It doesn't help that I have one right down the street from me. It's like having a crack house right next door. I spend on an average visit about $20. I leave with bags of Gap clothes that are in perfect condition and in style. If anyone can offer some advise on how I can make money doing this, please notify me as soon as possible before I spend all my savings and end up working at Goodwill.

I bought the sept. issue of seventeen magazine and in it was a coupon for a free t-shirt at wet seal and a coupon for a free jenny t-back at macys. I also had a coupon for $10 off a $10 or more purchase at JC Penneys and a coupon for a free mascara at estee lauder. I bought Leah a new wallet at JC penney original $42 but with there 70% off sale it came to $11.99 minus the $10 coupon it was $1.99. For all this stuff it cost me $2.99 for magazine and $1.99 for wallet. In the mail yesterday I got 10 free magazines, a Heinz pickle and ketchup pin, sample of Gillette shampoo for men and 3 samples of cajun cooling gel.

Yesterday I fell on the greatest shopping deal of a life time. All of you in the Sarasota area check it out. Those of you from out of town will just have to drool. A new Bealls clearance outlet has opened in Osprey Florida. Huge store and the sale was - 70% off then 40% off and then an additional 15% off at the register. We are talking great brand names here!! I spent $68 and here is my list: 2 sets of Pokemon 3pc. jammies for Ben, 3 men's shirts ( one was a Columbia brand ) 5 junior hip shirts, cool Jonn hardy swim trunks for Ben, 4 panties and a bra, super cool necklace,3 dresses, billibong flips, and a purse. Some of the shirts were only 60 cents!!!! I am in heaven- not only was it fun but I am still on a shoppers high. I hope you all who go there do as well as me.
